My Deceased Alter Ego

We are in a small town cemetery, not as visitors but as permanent tenants. A word of advice for you 'alive and well' ignorant fools, neither heaven nor hell exist, just perpetual death. It's all the same wherever they put you to rest.

Our population here is forty thousand people, or corpses, or souls. It doesn't matter if you're a good or a bad person, if you are a criminal or a saint. You and your bones will end up here with us, unless they cremate you. Your bones are your soul. Paradise does not exist, so you can start behaving like you don't care. Everybody should know that sinning has no bad side effects.

If you stop making babies now, all 130,000 people, currently living here in Visalia (Central California) would die in eighty years. That's an average of four deaths per day. Since we're not going anywhere, it'll get crowded here. As it is, you're throwing new bones on top of us already. This little graveyard, being as old as this town would run out of space in a few years. (We don't occupy any space, but our coffins do.) Reincarnation is out of the question.

Our town was founded over a hundred years ago. So far, I haven't heard of any escapees or fugitives. Therefore, either we're happy or there's no way out. We can only learn word of mouth about new stuff. We can't watch movies or TV, we don't hear music, or have access to the internet. It's kind of dead here. Our oldest tenant was born in 1861. We have a few heroes from World War I and II and other wars. Our newest guest arrived today, a nineteen-year-old boy gang member. We welcome everybody equally.

The parents of that kid haven't been happier in their whole lives (since they died.) They were already here waiting for him. We're not racists, everybody is welcome. Nothing to kill or die for, and not religion too. We see no colors either. Everybody is beautiful. Nobody's illegal, the way it should be everywhere. We're not Americans, Germans, English or Mexicans. We are just humans, wait . . . do you have to be alive to be human?

Another thing you should know is that when you die you don't grow up or grow old, you're soul stays the same age you were when you died. Over on this side, we know that money never mattered. We're all equal here. All vices and defects disappear when you die. And you feel lighter and 'sleep' better.

The world is like an airport, with departures and arrivals, where happiness and sadness converge. But in our place we never experience sadness anymore, we're just impatient and always wishing for a death in the family.

Here, all religious people learn upon arrival, about the futility of the time wasted in false and erroneous beliefs. Most of us shop around for houses and cars but not for religions, whatever religion our parents practiced, we inherit. That shouldn't be right. Anyway, now we know all religions are useless.

We can't intervene in any way with 'living souls', although it would be great if we could.

If we could reincarnate back to life like some religions believe, it  would be fine with us. It would be great if we could come back wiser and not make the same mistakes.

Sometimes teenagers jump over our fence at night to smoke grass, drink beer or to have sex, sometimes they do all three things at the same time. Some of us envy them, because we can't do any of those things anymore. In any case, they entertain us for a little while but we feel sorry for Juan, our gardener because he has to clean after them.

The best thing the Mexicans ever did was to invent a holiday that alive and dead people can enjoy together. The Day of the Dead.

I love those noisy Mexicans, they're very colorful, they come to serenade us with their music. They bring food, flowers and tequila. They join us and make us happy for a whole day and once a year we're all Mexicans and we all sing . . . "♫ pero sigo siendo el rey ♫" whatever that means, we all mean it too
